As it is written in Psalm 107:2: “Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story, those he has redeemed from the foe.” It is through each of us telling the story of what Jesus Christ has done for us through his death and resurrection that changes everything. In John 4, we read how the Samaritan woman shared the story of what Jesus had said and done, and because of her testimony – the whole village believed. Whether it is through countless other examples of stories in Scripture, or the same phenomenon we see occurring in our world today with friends, family, and even strangers – God calls us to tell our stories. When we begin to tell our stories, we realize they are not really “ours” but “his.” Through telling these stories – the body of Christ is built up, strengthened in faith, and knit together. Barry Backman has worked at Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch for over 18 years. He is a Youth Care Worker Team Lead, and works, along with his team, directly with the kids. As parents, most of us need to live through about seven teenage years. Barry has stood by at-risk teens for 18+ years, helping them discover their best selves.Barry is a giant of a man. I don’t know for sure how tall he is, but even when I wear high heels, I look a long way up to meet his eyes. He could be physically intimidating, but he’s not. He exudes calm and kindness. For our internal staff newsletter, I asked Barry to share how he helps the Ranch fulfill its mission of “helping at-risk children and their families succeed in the name of Christ.” I wanted to share his words with you. They will give you a true feel for the caliber of people, like Barry, who choose to be Ranchers.

We use the terms loosely, but I doubt anyone reading this article has ever been in the condition of having a lack of food leading to starvation.
