Lessons on Mission and Evangelism from Tanzania Today

The vision of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT) is: “To make people know Jesus Christ and have life in its fullness by bringing to them the Good News through words and deeds based on the Word of God as it is in the Bible and the Lutheran teachings guided by the ELCT Constitution.”   The Church focuses on propagating the “holistic” Gospel by serving man through spiritual, social, economic and environmental programs/interventions in order to have a God-loving community, thereby fulfilling God’s mission in Tanzania. In serving human beings in a holistic way, the ELCT carries out mission work within and outside the country using all types of means and media. Presenting at various times throughout the week in Nashville, join a breakout at the Mission Festival for a more in-depth and personal conversation with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

The Rev. Dr. Angela Olotu serves as Dean of the Theology Faculty and lecturer of Pastoral Theology at Tumaini University Makumira (TUMA). She is a pastor of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, holding a Doctorate of Theology with a focus on “Preaching in Times of HIV/AIDS” from Hamburg University in Germany. Her Masters in Theology focused on “Ministry to Imprisoned Murderers” and Bachelor of Divinity focused on “Women Pastors in Ministry,” both courses of study completed at TUMA. Dr. Olotu has served as a parish pastor, lecturer at Mwika Bible School, and continues in her role as Lecturer at TUMA, together with her responsibilities as Dean. “The church belongs to God himself; it’s the church of Christ.  And all of us are members of that one body. That means that we can learn from one another,” says Dr. Olotu. “In this case, we will strengthen our way of worshiping God and evangelism by working together.”

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. -Romans 12:1-2
